Leica X1 Review

by on January 19, 2012

Hey guys, welcome to my Leica X1 review.  I wanted to take a moment and talk to you guys about some of the pro’s and con’s surrounding this little guy.

Being informed is one of the most important things that you could do, especially when you are considering a purchase like this.  the Leica X1 comes in between $1,800 – $2,000 dollars, but I know that you’ll most certainly be impressed with this camera’s capabilities.

Leica X1 Review:

The Leica X1 is 2.5 x 4.8 x 2 inches, and 5 pounds making it extremely portable and really convenient.

It is an 12.2 megapixel 24mm camera.  The CMOS image sensor allows each individual pixel a larger sensor area so it receives more light as a result.  This makes the Leica X1 superior when it comes to taking pictures in low light, while performing wonderfully at minimizing noise.

The digital viewfinder is 2.7 inches, but with the optional fixed-mount Leica Elmarit 1:2.8/24 mm lens you can effectively change it into a universal reportage lens with a focal range of 36mm.

The more popular settings available on the Leica X1 are the single shot, continuous shot, and of course the self timer.  The continuous shot can product roughly 3 frames per second.

Also, one of the greatest accessories I’ve come to appreciate is the optional grip.  It screws to the bottom of the camera and provides great right handed control.

- Light weight and really compact.  The Leica X1 is smaller than other brands of similar ability making it easy to travel with and use.

- Works awesome in low lighting conditions.  Not every “staging” area is lit to ideal specifications.  This camera makes it easy to get crystal clear images even in low light.

- The popup flash is more powerful than most other cameras it’s size.  To raise and lower the flash is easy.  Simply apply pressure to the far left circle and the lens will raise.  Repeat the motion to retract.

- The Leica X1 has an extremely quite shutter.  This is great if you are shooting nature scenes, or taking pictures inside churches.

Leica X1 Review: The Con’s

- The camera is a little slower when it comes to processing.  For instance it has a slower LCD refresh rate and slower LCD playback.  Now, when I say slow it’s relative to some of the other camera’s in it’s range.  Overall I hardly noticed until a friend pointed it out when he compared it to his.

- Price: This camera’s price range rests somewhere between $1,800 – $2,000.  This isn’t your typical point and click camera.  You should have prior photography knowledge before making a purchase like this if you are going to make the investment and take full advantage of the Leica X1.

- It’s always wise to bring a spare battery when out and about.  The Leica X1 battery is roughly $80.  However, this can be greatly reduced if you are looking for a replacement somewhere like ebay.

That about wraps up my Leica X1 review.  I hope you are now armed with the appropriate knowledge needed to make an informed purchase decision regarding this awesome camera.
