Hey guys I recently had the opportunity to check out the Leica s2, and after much deliberation decided to write this Leica s2 Review. This is not your run of the mill point and click by any means. With the price of this camera coming in around $22,000 for just the body and an additional 6-7k for a high quality lens, you want to make sure you have some photographer experience before making a purchase like this.
However, if you are a professional photographer this camera is a must have.
Leica S2 Review:
The Leica S2 is a medium format camera disguised as a 35mm size. It’s all metal construction gives you the feeling of a high quality camera. This camera is great for outdoor shots as it is completely water resistant.
The Leica S2 takes pictures in 37.5 mega pixels and 30 X 45mm format.
It has the ability to interchange the lenses in the 35mm, 70mm, and 180mm ranges. The camera has the ability to accommodate shutter speeds up to 1/4000 of a second not to mention you can use the central shutter feature that allows a flash sync of 1/500 of a second.
The 3 inch high resolution LCD gives you ease of navigation when setting up more of the advanced settings. The display is protected by a scratch resistant sapphire glass, similar to the material you would find on an expensive watch. You select your menu items with the four soft touch buttons representing each quadrant of the display
Because of the power of modern processors this camera has a super large sensor and is twice as fast as other camera’s it’s size.
Leica S2 Review: The Pro’s
- Complete water resistance is great for outdoor live action or wilderness shoots. Your camera is protected in un predictable weather.
- Large view finder. almost the size of smaller camera’s lenses this gives you a great visual representation of what you are capturing on the camera. User friendly for those with glasses.
- The Leica S2 produces 72.5 MB RAW images or 106.6 MB JPG format. This is the equivalent of an image roughly 16″ X 24″ at 300 DPI.
- The storage. You have space enough for dual CF and SD card slots.
- Size. At 6.6 pounds you have a medium format camera with 35mm maneuverability. Combine this with the water resistance and you have the ultimate field Camera.
Leica S2 Review: The Con’s
- First and foremost I would have to say the price. This is not the general hobbiest’s camera by any means. You are paying for quality of materials, construction, and quality of picture. Even though it’s designed to handle outdoor shoots, it’s always in the back of your mind to be extra careful when handling. A colleague of mind pointed out “It’s really the perfect camera, I just wish it wasn’t the equivalent of a small car in price.”
- Unfortunately, besides issues with price I haven’t too many complaints. For the professional Photographer this camera is great to have in your arsenal.
I have to wrap up this Leica X2 review. I hope you’ve been able to get a better idea of the advantages this amazing camera has to offer and I suggest if you have the means, it really is the last camera you’ll ever need.
